How Fit Are You?
If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you cannot do, it with diet alone. When it comes to being healthy, fitness is as important as normal weight. The next step on the road to weight loss is to take a good look at your current level of fitness and begin thinking about how you can be more active. Think of it as a preventive health checkup.

Is lack of stamina keeping keeping you on the sidelines?
Just as you round the corner, you see the bus pull into the bus stop. If you pick up your pace, you ought to make it before the last passenger gets on and the doors close. But by the time you get there, you’re out of breath and your legs are aching, a sure sign that the muscles aren’t getting enough oxygen. And the bus has pulled away. Oh well, by the time the next bus comes the pain in your legs will have subsided and you ought to be breathing regularly.
It’s the company picnic and they’re choosing up sides for volleyball. You know you should join in. Not only is it a chance for informal socializing with your supervisor and coworkers, but it’s a great way to show the boss that you measure up as a team player, in more ways than one. But you also know you won’t last 5 minutes, so you sit on the sidelines and hope you aren’t losing too many “points.”
It’s a beautiful spring day and your 3- and 5-year-olds are playing tag. They call to you to join them, but after two times around the yard you’ve collapsed into a heap on the grass. “Come on,” they urge, pulling at your arms, but when it’s clear you’re out of steam, they run off, dismissing you with “Aw, you’re no fun.” If you recognize yourself in any of these three scenarios, your problem is lack of stamina.
A fitness review
Your endurance is largely determined by your cardiorespiratory health. If you are overweight and generally inactive, your heart and lungs have to work overtime to keep oxygenated blood circulating throughout your body.
Your strength is largely determined by the condition of your muscles, whereas your flexibility depends on joints and connective tissues (ligaments and tendons) as well as muscles. Again, overweight and inactivity have a negative effect on both strength and flexibility.
Being fit is like money in the bank, but you have to keep up your deposits.
Regular moderate activity will help you maintain fitness
The more active you are, the more fit you are likely to be and to remain as you grow older.
