Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery and Its Risks
It goes without saying that all surgical procedures involve a certain amount of risk. In general, the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band procedure performed by laparoscopy hospitals entail lesser risks than other methods of weight loss surgery. It should be noted that each and every patient will come across risks particular to their own bodies and the surgeon will explain these as and when required. The expertise of the surgeon and the laparoscopic training program that he enrolled in should also be a matter for concern before undergoing the surgery.
The risks for laparoscopic gastric band procedure can generally be divided into two groups. The risks that will be encountered at the surgery itself and the complications that might arise after surgery.
The surgical risks are:
a) The first and foremost of all risks is death itself. This can happen while in the surgery or after it. This risk is extremely low when it comes to gastric band surgery but it is nevertheless there in all major operations.
b) Gastric perforation is the second major risk that might be encountered. The stomach wall may suffer a tear as a direct or indirect result of the surgery which will result in another surgery to correct it.
The greater part of all the complications that might arise out of this particular surgery is not considered as serious. There may be some that dictate the need for hospitalization and further surgery but the possibilities are low. The most frequent post-surgery problems are regurgitation, nausea and vomiting and slipping of the gastric band. Complications, however, are dependent on the patients as individuals.
